The Native American and Indigenous Studies minor provides an in-depth understanding of the culture, history, and political standing of Indigenous people in contemporary society through a curriculum that weds community-engaged social activism with scholarship committed to tackling the legacies of racial injustice and settler colonialism.
In this program you will learn how Indigenous worldviews and decolonized ways of knowing can enrich our shared futures.
We offer two courses specifically for the minor (NAIS 101 and NAIS 401) as well as courses on Indigenous topics taught in the Departments of Anthropology, History, Religion, English, and Art History. We center community-engaged learning in our curriculum through established relationships with the state-recognized tribes in New Jersey: the Ramapough Lenape, Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape, and the Powhatan Renape communities.
